Historical Research, especially in the modern age, is full particularly puzzling paradoxes. One such is the combination of digitization and special collections. There is a lot of complexity when it comes to examining and digitizing special collections, yet in the modern age, there is also a lot of simplicity to this process.

The complexity lies within the researching of special collections. Since these collections are rare and difficult to come by outside of certain locations around the globe, it can be difficult to gain access to certain primary sources in these special collections. Even with the advancement of technology and digitization in the modern age, the process of transferring these collections into a digital setting is still very complex. Problems can arise on authenticity, the preservation of the original document, and beyond. In addition, access even on the digital side of things, can solely rely and depend on access to internet and viewing capabilites from various institutions. For instance, what one student or reasearcher can view at Special Collections at the University of Texas at Arlington, might not be accessible to a student at Texas A&M.

However, with the complexity also comes a level of simplicity as well. While the process of digitization can come with difficulties, the benefits are tremendous. It allows those who might not have access to special collections and other primary sources to gain access with ease. Even across instiutuions, a time is coming where these special collections could be mutually shared thanks in part to the developments of digitization. The upsides to digitization are astronomical, and the sky is the limit. Accessibility is a blessing as well as a potential curse to the age of digitization, and labs across the country are beginning to hop on the digitization train.
